If you are in Chino, CA, it couldn't possible be rot?
Could possibly be sun scald or nutrient deficiency.

Also, in your second photo it almost looks like something took a tiny bit out of it, without going all the way through. Have you checked for slugs? During the day you can look under a rock, board, etc in the area of the plants.
