I hope your hakone grows. Please let us know the progress. I see your original post was in Janauary. I take it hakone is doing great?? Are they larger than the 4" pot it came in?? I am in Houston/ 9A. I would love to try it but I trust the zone category and fear I would just be disappointed. The tiny roots might belong to your Red Maple. I have tiny tree roots everywhere! They suck up all my water.
