We name the long-term critters (horses, cows, goats, etc) except for the egg birds. Anyone slated for the table remains anonymous. I found it was easier when the kids were little if it was just "that bull calf" or "one of the meat birds" rather than telling them that we were eating Tom or Frank (they always asked if it was one of ours or store bought). If it had a name, it was too close to eating a pet for them. Nowadays, if someone earns a name, it is a good omen for a long and happy life.
30 or 40 years ago, I went through a phase where everything that came in was promptly named Fred. We had Fred the parrot, Fred the cat, Fred the houseplant.... but I quickly passed beyond that.
