Bill Waldrop currently has a wonderful description, complete with pictures, for the actual initial process used in converting diploids to tetraploids.

After the initial conversion process it is necessary to wait until the plant blooms again so that he can check the pollen with a microscope to see if it has doubled in size, and that is how he confirms that the plant has been converted.
