I don't know if this works for everyone, but the middle mouse button for me opens a link in a new tab. I'm referring to the wheel of my mouse. If I click the wheel on a link, it goes to a new tab. Ctrl-Left Click works, too, just like
@Horntoad said. And if I want the link in a new window then I click regularly (left click) while holding the shift key down.
