Part one of the ATP Hybridizer Series on the Joiner family focused on the beginning of Joiner Daylily Gardens and the hybridizing program of Enman R. Joiner Sr. In this second part we continue with the hybridizing programs of his son Royce, daughter-in-law Jan and grandson Aaron, the second and third generations of this talented family of hybridizers.

Royce and Jan were married in Oct. of 1975, Royce was employed at a Savannah paper company and Jan a hairdresser. It wasn’t long before Jan found herself in the garden weeding and walking with Enman as he explained the merits and faults seen in the daylilies. With his guidance she learned the basics of hybridizing, the importance of looking at the whole plant and to follow her own dream for the daylilies she wanted to produce.

After the birth of their daughter Rebecca, Jan quit her job to stay at home. Being home also had the advantage of giving her more time to be in the garden with the daylilies. Jan’s first registration was the cultivar ‘Sweet Beginning’ in 1986. Early on the spiders and unusual forms caught Jan’s eye with their narrow tepals and movement. In 1991 ‘Jan’s Twister’, an 11 ½ “peach unusual form, was registered.

‘Jan’s Twister’ was her first AHS specialty award winner and was the first recipient of the newly established Lambert/Webster Award for best unusual form in 2000. Other awards for ‘Jan’s Twister include a 1994 Honorable Mention, 1997 Award of Merit, the 2003 Lennington All American and first runner-up for the Stout Silver Medal in 2001.

From her double form breeding came the beautiful ‘Peggy Jeffcoat’ (1995) another major award winner receiving a 1998 Honorable Mention, 2001 Ida Munson Award for best double form and an Award of Merit , and later the 2010 Lennington All American Award.

Along the way combining these different hybridizing programs, her narrow spider and unusual forms and the double forms, became an important part of Jan’s dream. 'Fluttering Beauty', an unusual double form, was her first multiform (an AHS Exhibition term for a daylily that is registered as having characteristics of at least two of the six separately recognized daylily forms) and was registered in 1999. “Fluttering Beauty’ was an Honorable Mention winner in 2003.

‘Sebastian the Crab’ (2003), another of her unusual double forms, received an Honorable Mention in 2009, the Ida Munson Award for best double flower and an Award of Merit in 2012 and in AHS Exhibitions a 2003 Achievement Medal.

In 2013 ‘Firefly Frenzy’, a bright yellow 8” unusual double form, was runner-up for the Stout Silver Medal. ‘Firefly Frenzy ‘also received the Ida Munson Award in 2011.

Jan Joiner was awarded the 2009 Bertrand Farr Silver Medal for outstanding results in hybridizing, an award her mentor Enman R. Joiner received in 1993.

Aaron Joiner, the third generation of the Joiner family to hybridize, began hybridizing daylilies when he was 8 years old. In 2000 he was the first youth to win the Region 5 Hybridizer Award for ‘Aaron’s Little Whopper’ (Joiner –A, 1999).

‘Aaron’s Little Whopper’ (1999), ‘Aaron’s Dinner Plate’ (2001), ‘Aaron’s Whopper’ (1998) and ‘I Finally Did It’ (2003) have all received Honorable Mentions.

Following in the family tradition Aaron has also registered double forms. His father, Royce, is hybridizing and his first registration “Music Mix’ was registered in 2011. (Sorry, there currently are no images of the introductions from Royce in the ATP Database) A few years ago Royce and Jan moved Joiners Daylily Gardens from Savannah, Georgia to Pembroke, Georgia where they continue the legacy of hybridizing beautiful daylilies with the Joiner name.
