Gail Korn is in Nebraska. Not sure how that compares to your area… but I have known Gail for over 20 years, and she has had some really rough growing conditions. If plants do well for her, surely they would for you too.

Here is the AHS page for your area…. There are a few display gardens listed for Iowa. Don't hesitate to contact these gardens. They are homeowners who love to have people visit and enjoy their plants…. and often they enjoy talking about them on the phone and giving advice to new people in the area. You can also see the info on this page for your local daylily clubs.

I agree with grow what you like --- but I find so many people, when starting out - just start buying, before they really know what is available in daylilies. By going to Display Gardens and to shows put on by Clubs, you can see the REAL colors and forms and what the daylilies REALLY look like, not the touched up photos on websites and in catalogs. You may also find that when you see them in person, you like something totally different than you did when looking online.
