Apparently the racoons and birds didn't get that memo--
The ripened fruit, the tomato itself, is perfectly safe and edible for many species because it does not contain the toxic solanine, a glycoalkoloid.
Both humans and deer would have ill effects consuming the rest of the plant...
Manduca larva, conversely, are an example of a species well equipped to devour the rest of the plant.
