The plant in photo #3 just reminded me of a viburnum that grows here:

Sweet Viburnum (Viburnum odoratissimum)

The plant with serrated leaf margins reminds me a bit of Osmanthus but I don't even know if that grows in your area.

I'm always curious so I hope someone can identify them for you! Maybe other's from California will see this post and recognize one or both.
