Well, I hate to be a negative nellie over this but if I was building an herb spiral with the intention of growing perennial herbs and vegetables, I'd want it to last more than a season or two. The labor is high no matter what material you're using so doing it once with poor materials, and then later doing it over again with better ones seems like an inefficient strategy.
