I suppose it depends on your zone re whether trumpet vine is a problem or not. I planted one at the base of a porch pole support and ended up digging it out because it never bloomed (I gave it a good 3-4 years) and it also didn't really grow up the post much - seemed to want to splay out laterally and weave its way around our lower rock veneer. Since digging it out, I've perhaps had a couple stragglers pop up, but nothing major. I don't recall what cultivar I had, which would also play a part in my rather poor experience with this plant.
