Herbaceous perennials are what I have in mind for this thread. While bulb plants are perennials, and typically get most of the attention at this time of year, I love combining herbaceous perennials with them to give the garden a lush look as early as possible.

Some favorites of mine are:
Mertensia virginica, Virginia Bluebells
Phlox- various spring blooming species
Ajuga
Lathyrus vernus
Dicentra spectabilis, Bleeding Heart
Hellebores
Aquilegia various species and cultivars
Epimedium
