He might be a Carpenter Bee. We have them and they actually come to the door and look at me or follow me around when I'm outside. One just did that yesterday. Very friendly. Only the females sting and then only when they are threatened. The males just dive bomb what they perceive as threats. I suppose that usually does the trick.
I garden for the pollinators.
