Jo, I have one of these and it pretty much looks like yours, a little elongated and not as compact as you would like it to be. I have it in cactus soil in a pot. Sits mostly in shade though I think it could take a little of morning sun which may help with keeping it more compact. I have it planted with 5 other plants. The pot it is in with haworthias and gasteria dictates more of the pot being in shade and so the watering is a deep one but only once every two weeks. I think a deep watering and letting it dry out before next would be a good rule of thumb. Let it have some light whether it be bright window or protected outdoor light. I definitely think to have optimal shape it should not just sit entirely in shade.
