Cheryl, alfalfa pellets are amazing fertilizer for daylilys, hostas, roses, peonies, PLUS they help to condition the soil. Here's a link to a post you can read about it:

You can put the pellets around the plants under the mulch as well as in the bottom of the planting hole but MAKE SURE to put dirt on them to keep them from direct contact with the roots right away.
