My roses are winding down their 1st flush.. this weekend fried most everyone. I noticed that the reds do not like the heat the worst. They look HORRIBLE. Firefighter, Ink Spots, Mr. Lincoln, Oklahoma are all crispy & yucky looking. Nicole Carol Miller held up the best I think, other than Marilyn Monroe. Most of the mauves are crisped on the edges, but not half as bad as the reds. The oranges held up pretty good, too. The whites, however.. they're shattering left & right. I tried to bring in a White Licorice to my office and every single bloom just went POOF when I cut them. Cha-CHING! is still throwing weird looking blooms.. (see this thread The thread "What is wrong with this rose?" in Roses forum) but Dream Come True seems to be OK. And one rose I wasn't expecting to survive did. I had a teeny little plant coming up through all the mulch & was waiting to see who it was.. and it's Star of the Nile! Yay!! She's sending out tiny little blooms, only about the size of a half-dollar, but still, who cares, she survived! I have a couple of other roses that I don't know who they are so I'm going to have to check out my maps & stuff and see if I still have names because most of the placards I put have faded. Sad I really need to get a better system of labeling my roses! Unfortunately, one of the roses that did not survive was Silverado. She just couldn't survive the extreme harsh winter we had this year. And that's going to be a difficult one to replace.. 1) can't find it locally (or even on order!) and 2) I have Vasillia buried under her, so I don't want to dig her up. Vasillia is probably about 3' down, but still, I don't want to disturb her. My Purple Splash is more like Pink Splash this year.. definitely much more of a raspberry color than purple. Halle & Typhoon are blooming like mad and they're gorgeous this year (only took them like 3 years to get going). Distant Drums .. while I love this rose, is just not that vase-worthy as the blooms seem to explode when you touch them. South Africa is gorgeous, Magenta is showing me tiny blooms (last year they were over 2" across, this year maybe 1.5"?). I thought Hansa was a one-trick pony, but she's blooming constantly. Oh, even my Austrian Copper is sending out a 2nd flush of blooms? Weird!!! I did lose 1 rose from Palatine this year, but everyone else is either in bloom or getting ready to. Leonardo diVinci is definitely not climbing.. he's only about 18-20" tall. Storm Warning is the same way.. definitely not climbing. Most of my climbers don't climb. I thought I completely lost Charles de Mills when I transplanted him and I did lose *that* bush, but since it was an own-root, and apparently I didn't get all the roots when I dug him up, I have a new little CdM growing where he was next to the house! Glad that I didn't lose him. Rose Marie Viaud is still blooming teeny little bitty blooms.. she should have started months ago, but nope, she's going on now. I have a rose growing next to my Ice Girl that I thought was Ice Girl but isn't.. I'm guessing that it's a Moonstone. And I have a rose that's half Dr. Huey and half whatever-it-is, but the problem is that I don't know who it is!

1st world problems...
