I am a maniac.
I use seed starting mix about three to four inches deep. I water it generously before starting to place the seeds. I've found that refrigerators dumped at the trash place have great glass shelves, and bins. I was getting a nice collection before the Man showed up one day, telling me that I had to stop "because I might cut myself" I did not say, "Yes, Mommie" like I wanted to.
I lay the seed about that far apart, see photo of seedlings above,, then go back and give each one a bit of a push into the medium to make good contact. Then I sift nearly dry peat over them to just barely cover.
Using a clean Windex spray bottle, I spray them wet, with plain water, then I re-cover the seeds that got washed clean. Then I set them in a corner with light, but not direct sunlight. I loosely cover with plastic, making sure theres air circulation.
I spray the surface every morning. Then once the seedlings begin to pop up, in about five or six days, I spray them at least twice a day to make the seed coat wet, so the babies can shrug themselves free. I don't try to tug off the seed coat, that wiggles the seedling's delicate roots too much, as well as often leaving the 'peanut paper' thingie on them , which is not good at all..
Oh, when they start to pop up is when I start fertilizing them. Roots look for food as well as water.
Whew, lotta typing! Just about any container is OK, a carry-out pan is good, too, if you don't have too many seeds
