Some sort of light mulch is always a good thing in pots to avoid soil splashage when watering.

You know your finger can get through light mulch to test the soil and I know you know how it will benefit waterings.

Real sphagnum and not Peat Moss type Spaghnum is what I use in many of my containers and of course our plethora of Spanish Moss growing all in the trees around here which is a living plant too.

Utah is so different from here. It's so humidity dry.

They have Spaghnum Moss in the natural form at "Dollar Trees" for a buck a bag. Its usually used for crafting and in the crafting area. Ty it. You won't know till you do. I tip my hat to you.
