AHS's position is that we strongly encourage hybridizers to register cultivars BEFORE they are put out in commerce, so as to avoid confusing or upsetting their customers. However, this is a voluntary process and we are not the daylily police. Those who do not register are in effect selling seedlings with no guarantee that the name will be honored or protected once in commerce. Buyers also have the responsibility ( if registration is important to them) to check before they purchase to verify if the cultivar is registered. Unregistered cultivars cannot ever be eligible for any AHS Awards, shows, or be shown or mentioned in the Daylily Journal. Of course, this does not matter to many people. But if you are spending big bucks for the latest and greatest new intros out there, why would you do that only to find out later that you have bought a seedling that is not registered? Is an unregistered seedling really worth that $200 asking price? Caveat Emptor .
The hybridizer listed above has some daylilies in commerce that have not been registered. Others are registered. This practice regrettably, does cause confusion!
