I am in southern Wisconsin and that is exactly what I do too. I have transplanted into early October and had them survive, but try not to do anything past mid September. I too use leaves from my trees to mulch, and start removing them in the spring as able. I put a lot of leaves down as they will 'collapse' down. Besides, I have a lot of trees......
