Ken, here's an extremist view of the Monsanto story going around. Sadly at least some of what's written in this article is true. eg. they were responsible for much of the dioxin pollution of the 60's and 70's, and were the first big corporation to make a career of defending their toxic products in court.

The mulch that is made from cypress by-products of the lumber harvest is considered ok, environmentally. The bark and branches are chipped up and used for good mulch. It used to have a designation, "cypress A" is lumber by-product and "cypress B" was not acceptable trees harvested just for mulch. Harvesting of cypress in Florida strictly for mulch production is no longer happening, from what I understand. So I think the only cypress mulch you can get here is cypress A, and is sustainably used by-product.
The right mulch to use here in Florida is definitely Florimulch, made from invasive Melaleuca trees.
