Last year I was surprised to see that self-sown species plants grew and flowered beautifully on the north side of our 3.5' high deck. They saw no direct sun except for maybe a touch in the evening, but the area is otherwise open so the light level is still pretty high. This year I set a pot of extra seedlings out of the way, near the same area but closer to a large lilac bush (blocking more of the evening light), and those plants had smaller blooms and crazily contorted stems.
