Thanks all! I felt for sure it was Hibiscus also.
She said that she bought this last year, and it bloomed beautifully with red flowers, all year long. It came back for her this year with nothing but the leaves...No sign of budding or blooming at all. I'll have to ask her if she's been feeding it.
