The best way that I have found to get around this is to print several labels at once and use the 'chain printing' setting. It will spit out the piece at the beginning which is the machine getting to new tape that has not had the adhesive exposed to the air and potentially drying out due to how the cartridges are designed and function. After that it will just print the label and cut it off then the next and next and so on. It will print that 3/4 inch piece at the start no matter what.

There are also margin settings that can be adjusted down to prevent it running extra blank tape at the end. This is a constant battle in the lab because there is one person here who insists on changing the settings when she uses the machine. Drives me nuts.

And yes, do shop around for the labels. I think the current batch I picked up when Amazon had them on a gold box special for $12-$14 a roll or so.
