I too see the resemblance to Campsis radicans (trumpet vine), and wondered if there are tropical species. Trumpet vine grows wild around here, and can be aggressive, but I'd never seen this plant before this spring. This plant, however, is non-vining, and I believe would be classified as a shrub (the base appears woody).
