I'm no expert on this, but part of the confusion may be that the third photo shows the winter-forced "chicons" -- I only know this because I want to grow this next year (thank you, Chelle, for offering seeds on the Piggy Swap!). The plant grows as basically a weed thing the first year, then you dig it up, stick the roots in buckets, and keep it cold until you want it to start growing the "chicons." Yeah, it's a long winter here, I'm willing to do almost anything to pretend I'm still gardening Rolling my eyes.
