Your plant appears to be Colocasia gigantea, most likely a native of tropical SE Asia and readily available here in the states. Has it bloomed for you?

Even with mulch on top I'd be concerned about your soil temps in an unprotected brick planter. As Dutchlady noted, a deep freeze will be a problem. Does the soil ever freeze solid in this planter?
