Hi Carl,
You are about half right, I keep the pots on a brick patio and also keep them in those little water saucers that fit beneath the pot. I do have a lot still running loose in my yard, thanks to my ignorance a few decades ago, but the chocolate mint as well as one that tastes like a citrus-y mint live in the pots. It works for me. I have no idea what the citrus-y mint is, but if there is a lemon/lime Mentha, I have it. It was a gift, unlabeled, so it could very well be just about anything in the mint family.
