I do not do any thing different for the show flowers than the rest of the garden, all get plenty of water and fertilizer all year. After being an Exhibition Judge for several years I do have several daylilies that are only used for show's, these are ones I have judged or seen in shows over the years. These daylilies will normally preform close to what the hybridizer says when he or she registers the daylily with AHS. It is important that the bloom, branch's and bud count be close to the registration information. The other important thing is the scape must be clean and green, on show day I only choose daylilies that need minimum grooming. Also a lot of the older daylilies are really good show flowers, all that new bling doesn't necessarily mean its a winner.
