I grow my pineapple top in a container. I bring it outdoors and keep it there during late spring and as late as I can during late fall. It sure does like lots of sun here, and a good dousing of water since our temps soar quite high and very dry. But once temps start to dip in the mid 40's I bring it in and stays by my south facing window. I water it too to keep media moist. I use well draining media so it does not get too water logged. Give allowance around the plant, those leaves grow long and pokey as it tries to get as much light and sun as it can while indoors. I have not gotten it to bear fruit yet, I believe it takes about 3 years, so I am hoping it will be ready by 2016.

Agree with Elaine, in the Philippines where there are lots of pineapple farms, I see them grown in full sun, lining up the mountains or sometimes under coconut trees. They get lots of torrential rains there, but the warm to hot temps there with high humidity is how it likes to grow in.
