For the pokey leaves, if you have the plant indoors, don't hesitate to cut off the ends of the leaves so they won't spear you! They're very sharp, and it doesn't hurt the plant one bit.
I even do this with mine that grow alongside the gravel walkways in my garden. I've leaned down to pull a few weeds and nearly caught one in the eye, too!
