Happy Groundhog Day...six more weeks of winter. The January Daylily Alphabet was a bright spot of color for all of us with the many beautiful images of our daylilies posted to the threads. For February I thought maybe we could take a look at and discuss the different terms associated with daylilies......our experiences, questions, definitions, additional information, images, etc.

I found images of Anthers in my files ....
Most daylily blooms have 6 anthers. They are located at the tip of the stamens. Stamens have two parts, the long stem is called the filament and at the end of the filament is the anther with 2 pollen sacs containing the pollen.
Early in the morning the anthers are closed....
As the day warms the two pollen sacs begin to open and the pollen dries and gets fluffy....
A fully open anther ....
For hybridizing the entire stamen can be picked and the filament used as a handle... for dabbing the pollen when making crosses.....and for carrying the all important pollen from flower to flower when stuck between the lips or teeth of the hybridizer. I sometimes will have 3 or 4 carried this way...sorry no images
