Flowers will determine the exact identity so watch for blooms. Now that I look more closely at the photo you posted, the leaves look too large to be the Carolina Cranesbill Geranium, at least the ones that grow in my yard have very small leaves. I think @wildflowers may be onto something with the possibility of the plant being Callirhoe involucrata. Although this map doesn't show it occurring in N.C., I wouldn't doubt it's presence in the area: http://plants.usda.gov/core/pr...
