Gladiolus, I agree. I've seen them growing wild in the Iberian peninsula. The book Flowers of the Mediterranean by Polunin and Huxley list four, Gladiolus segetum, G. byzantinus, G. communis and G. illyricus. This is an old edition of the book (1972) so the names aren't necessarily current. I think byzantinus is now communis subsp. byzantinus, for example.
