Hi everyone, I'm new to posting on the Fuchsia forum. I used to collect fuchsias where I grew up in the UK, had about 90 cultivars and species in a greenhouse and outdoors (probably equivalent to about USDA Zone 8 or 9 as far as winters are concerned) ranging from little F. procumbens to 'Texas Longhorn'. I used to get cuttings by mail, it was very easy there! They don't do so well here in Canada, hot in summer, not practical to have a greenhouse and no chance of wintering outdoors.
Every year, though, I have a 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt' on the deck for the hummingbirds. Anyway, enough rambling - I was at a local garden centre the other day and just couldn't resist this little fuchsia, 'Sunbeam Cherry'. I Googled but didn't find out much about it, and it doesn't seem to be in the ATP database unless I somehow missed it (although going through the ATP list was an exercise in nostalgia!). It's a cutie, many flowers pointing somewhat upwards. I know there are issues with daylilies being sold under trademarked names which are therefore not valid cultivar names. Is there any reason like that with fuchsias why this one isn't in the ATP database? Thanks for any info.
I'm getting inspired to try overwintering a few fuchsias in the house again like I did years ago in the UK before getting the greenhouse. It doesn't seem to be as easy to get rooted cuttings here in Canada as it is (or at least was when I was there) in the UK.
