Dear Nancy, the Great Hall was used for lavish Banquets for the Kings and Queens, Noblemen and the clergy!
After the palace was demolished in the English Civil War, the Great Hall fell into disrepair and end up being used as a barn. Then it started to be restored until they allowed someone to build a 1930s House there and call it a palace. This would not be allowed nowadays but was in the 1930s because the couple were rich!
Hope that answers your question.
Regards.
Neil.
