Trust me, I am no expert. But when that happens to me from the bottom up or at the joint of branches it signals rotting . Simply cut off the soft part until you come to clean white healthy stem. It may or may not have white latex. It appears your cutting is long enough to salvage. Just cut it all off or it will continue to spread upward...any thoughts on mine? It is getting soft in the center of the branches.
