Don't forget that buildings create shade also. So maybe you have areas that block the hottest sun and provide shade in the afternoons, and still allow some morning sun? Trees do provide shade, but remember that they also have roots and they draw huge amounts of nutrients and moisture away from any small plants planted near them, sometimes even not so near them.
