I had a couple of varieties last year completely lose their fans, but the rhizomes remained firm. It was during the time of year when it was hot and dry, and when cooler temps and rain returned they started developing fans again. This year the same irises have remained green and happy looking, but then we've had the wettest summer I can recall.
