I don't know a thing about Chinese Bottle Gourds, or any gourds for that matter
but when googling for pests and diseases that affect the plant I found this information:

I wonder if the problem with the leaves on your plant could be Anthracnose? Check out some of these photos for of leaves with Anthracnose for comparison:
