They're not an annual. I live in a Zone 2b area in Alberta Canada and I have numerous Heucheras thriving. I love them. They are so cheerful to see when the snow melts. It's an instant hit of color after the long dark winter. And right now they are looking fantastic, even though I moved some of them this summer, and some of them are four years old, or older. They definitely don't like the hot sun. Mine do best with morning sun and shade in the afternoon.
