I would try to prevent dry-moist-dry soil episodes, fertilize as needed per label directions and definitely not let them get too cold in the winter months. I have to bring them inside the house when cold weather rears its ugly head. And in my house, I have to keep the pooches away when I apply the fertilizer as it appears to smell 'nice' to them.
