I've been experimenting with various herbal lotions and potions and thought I'd share a fairly simple and straight forward recipe loosely based on Rosemary Gladstar's book 'Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health'. I have used "P" to indicate part - this can be 1 C, 1/2 C, or whatever measurement you like, it's all about the ratio of one ingredient to the other. I usually make up a pretty small batch to begin with, so I can tweak my recipe. My guess is the temperature and humidity of the day also plays into things. I do keep track of what I put in, although I don't necessarily weigh the herbs, just make a note of what ones I use measured by the handful. Not real scientific, so each batch is it's own creation.
Gather whatever herbs you want to use, either fresh or dried. I research what I have and what the purpose is for my lotion - soothing, healing, facial, etc. It's usually a mish-mash of what's available, although sometimes I go to the local co-op for things I don't have on hand.
Heat 1 P solid oil to 2 P liquid oil in a crockpot (I use the mini-size) or over low heat - I like solid coconut oil mixed with olive or grapeseed oil, but any combination will work.
Infuse the herbs in the oils for a couple hours or longer, then strain the melted oils into a blender or small food processor.
Add a bit of lanolin and melt about 1/3-1/2 P grated beeswax in the hot oil (more for a salve, less for a lotion).
You may also add some Vitamin E, Vitamin C, or essential oils of your choice as the oils cool down. Let cool to about room temp.
For a salve, you can now pour into small containers. If the cooled consistency is too loose, add more beeswax and reheat gently.
For a lotion, slowly trickle in 3 P liquid, blending on high. I often use a mix of 2/3 P spring water to 1/3 P aloe vera gel for the liquid. Rose water is nice for a facial lotion, but is expensive. Witch hazel can be part of the liquid. Use your imagination. Mixing the liquid to oil will emulsify much like making mayonnaise, ending with a smooth white lotion.
Be sure to label your products - I can't tell you how many small containers of mystery potions I have here and there - I need to get much better at this last step!
