I have never heard of overwintering mums in such a manner so I don't know if it will work.
I can say I grow LOTS of hardy mums. And fall planting has only been successful on two plants. This year I needed to move lots of my mums. I potted them up early summer and only got them planted late August. So we'll see if they over winter.
