The leaves on mine do dry up on the bottom so I pulled them off when they came off easily. They need moist atmosphere, in dry air the tips will dry up. I've had one from a young plant for around 17 years, it got tall and leggy but is still alive with a couple of new offshoots growing from the base so I might have to cut off the lanky stem.
The plant you have looks to already have been cut back, can you see a stump in the middle? If not then it will be several young plants growing in the same pot.
