If it's any help, I have the KSM90 "Ultra Power" that I bought about 30 years ago. It's the type where the head tilts back to lift the beater. I think there was an earlier model of the same kind, but with somewhat less power. That may be what your Mom has. Mine works fine with the grinder attachment, but you do have to feed it small chunks gradually, or it will bog down. And of course, the size of the holes in the plate make a difference, too. I generally do a coarse grind first, then run it back through the smaller plate.
