I've often needed that, too, but there is a very simple, one click work around:
First star any post in the thread, just as you always would.
Once you revisit your starred post, just click on the thread title:
Some other forum sites default to going directly to the post
and within the thread. This would be optimal, but for those with slow computers, loading the entire thread needlessly could take extra time that impatient users won't like.
