Hey Jon,
I have had rust here from early on. SOT got it like all the rest of the daylilies in my garden (600+). I do not remember it standing out as being worse than any others, mainly because that first year---all the plants had it bad. In subsequent years it is almost as if the plants are developing some resistance to rust. The infection each year has been widespread throughout the garden (lending credence to the theory that it remains in the green parts of the EVR's and Sev's over winter). However, it has not been nearly as bad as that first year or two. Now it appears late in the season---and accounts for a greater portion of summer dormancy than I used to have. It can , to a small degree, effect the scape/flower performance of the late bloomers---but really has not been the problem we all thought it would be when it first appeared. I spray as little as I can--and only for bad bugs---and only if they get really out of control. The few plants that were especially hard-hit by rust (Ed Brown)---have ceased to exist, and will not be repurchased.
Shores Of Time is definitely one of my Favorite daylilies. I affirm that it is one of the best pinks around--with the added bonus of that great White-gold edge. The flowers open very flat with few hang-ups---despite the round, fullness of the flower. It grew and bloomed well for the first couple years---but then started a slow downhill course. I thought it was "one of those"---but then finally realized that the place where it was planted had become much shadier (probably due to extraordinary high amounts of rain the past four years here---and higher CO2 in the atmosphere). The trees have grown an average of almost ten feet in the past five years. That is impressive growth--especially for the hardwoods---and has led to areas of fairly deep shade where none existed just seven years earlier. I dug it up and potted it in some great soil---and moved it to a full-sun place two years ago. It has subsequently come roaring back--and will, I am sure, produce a great abundance of flowers that is long-awaited--and will be much appreciated.
