August 14-18 for kids K–5th. The theme this week is “STEM and Roots: Science in the garden.” Come investigate all the processes that make the garden come alive in the summer. Dissect seeds, dig into the compost bin ecosystem, learn about insect anatomy, test for important nutrients in the soil, design a germination experiment, put on a photosynthesis play, and explore how seeds and plants travel.K-5 students from any school who enjoy the outdoors, food and fun. There are spots for 20 kids each week. The lead teacher, Julie Welch is a Growing Gardens staff with years of experience using school gardens to inspire young minds.
Julie is the Garden Specialist at Abernethy elementary. Prior to this role, she served the last eight years in the Bay Area as the Garden Manager at Saint Mary’s College of California. She was also a staff member at the Nature Education Center and Garden in Orinda Unified School District, and Nature Activity Coordinator at the Trails to Success summer adventure horse camp. Prior to that she was a middle school special education teacher.
