LysmachiaMoon's blog: One big ache

Posted on Apr 10, 2015 6:37 AM

Every spring, I never realize how out of shape I get over the winter. Yesterday I spent a few hours in the veg, just weeding....weeded out one of the 2 strawberry beds. Weeded the big circle bed in the middle, went back over the flower border along the front (I'm determined to get ahead of the weeds this year; I figured I'd keep going back over the beds I've weeded every week and rout out anything that sprouted). It wasn't hard work, just that sort of crouched over, crawling along kind of thing...but oh mommy, do my legs ache this morning! *LOL* Of course, wearing those 5 pound mud boots (which after you get mud on them weigh oh, I'd say, somewhere around 50 pounds each....) doesn't help.

So, anyways, I'm in the garden weeding and I smell a skunk. I think "hmm....a skunk must have visited during the night." Persistent smell. I hope a skunk didn't die somewhere near here. I even walked out to the road to see if there was one lying dead there....but the smell wasn't there. Just in the veg. Then I remembered: I planted 3 bulbs of Crown Imperials and they are sprouting. I was prepared for the "skunkiness" of the flowers, but apparently the whole plant smells like it! Let's hope it drives off groundhogs.

Today is supposed to be spectacular, with temperatures approaching 80. Dont see that so far: cold and overcast. I think I'll try to finish up a bit more in the office, then head out and plant the asparagus.

I'm already starting to feel a bit overwhelmed. It's like winter winter winter and then the first signs of green and then WHAM! everything coming on at once.

My strange addiction and withdrawal. So, being Polish, it is a tradition that every Easter, some female in the family bakes poppyseed rolls. These are basically bread dough rolled out thin, spread with cooked poppyseed/sugar paste, then rolled up and baked. I love the stuff. Since I was a baby I loved the stuff. This year, i decided to try baking one myself. I had tried making poppyseed roll using the storebought jarred filling, but it was icky. So, bought a bag of poppyseeds and cooked them down with sugar and a little corn starch. Everything went very well. Except I overestimated how much filling I would need and had a lot of it. That's ok I thought. I like the stuff! So had a poppyseed roll that was more poppyseed than bread. Delicious. It must be an acquired taste because R wouldn't eat it. He said it' "smelled funny." *shrug* more for me. Ate the whole thing, a couple slices for breakfast, a little for lunch, dessert after supper.... yum. Noticed that I was sleeping very well. Even a bit sleepy during the day. *shrug* Well, yeah, I work hard. But yum yum lets have more poppyseed roll. Then, on Sunday, I fell asleep sitting up at my desk. Yep. One minute working, next minute Zzzzzz Sawing logs. Hmm. That's odd. Let's go get some coffee..and a slice of poppyseed roll.

Finally the whole thing was gone. Eaten. No more. *sigh* Oh well. That was Weds. Thursday, I woke up feelign a little odd. Sort of queasy. Not quite well. Maybe a bit of a headache. By late afternoon, definitely feeling a bit out of sorts. Did not sleep well last night. Restless. Woke up this morning feeling ok though. And over my first cup of coffee it hit me: POPPYSEED contains trace amounts of opium. Oh dear god, I'm a poppyseed junkie!!!! No wonder all those old Polish folks were so happy come Easter. *LOL*

Good thing Easter only comes once a year.
